Hello all!

I have had a wonderful break from cakes, but missed it just a little bit {read: a lot}. So I have decided to reopen the wedding cake shop!!!

I will be accepting orders for the 2013 wedding cake season on a limited basis. My <strike>availability</strike> 16-month old prevents me from going hung-ho...but like I said before, I just can't stay away.

Here are some things that have changed:

-Wedding cakes only; no more dessert bars, cupcakes, or party cakes. While I love them, they are super time consuming and distract from my love of wedding cake!

-I will only be able to book about two weddings a month. This is good for you, It means you have all my attention for your wonderful confectionary creation.

Thanks all for now...don't get excited, I'm sure I won't be able to muster up another blog post before (at least) the Forth of July!!

It has been way too long since my last update...uhhhh March 6th? Yikes! Let's just say I've been a little bit busy. Which brings me to the point of this post...

A Couple of Sweet Things is booked thru January 1, 2013 and won't begin consultations for the 2013 spring/summer wedding season until {at least} January 2013.

The above statement may seem a little weird, so let me explain. As you all know in October of 2011 I had a little baby girl...and well my life changed. Before having Ashlynn I thought I would just "continue as normal" once she arrived. I tried, believe me I tried, but it sucked. Even with having the shop attached to the house, it was hard. Waking up at 4am to make sugar flowers, baking during nap time and decorating after bedtime was exhausting. As I continued this schedule through the wedding busy season, my passion for decorating became more of a chore...not the labor of love it once was.

With all this being said, I have decided to take a bit of a sabbatical from cakes. I'm not leaving forever, I just need to figure some things out.

My plan is to take a few months off...no emails, no cell phone, no cakes (well I may practice a bit;))...but I need to do what it takes to find the love of designing and decorating that is lost.

I'm sure there will be angered and frustrated people, but please know that I value and care for each and every one of my clients. This decision is one I have been grappling with for months and it's the right thing for me...I mean it's just cake after all, right?

xoxo
Jenny
**My "sabbatical" will not begin until every last order that is currently on the books is complete and fabulous! No need to panic, I'm just not accepting new orders. Booked orders will NOT be impacted.** Contact Informationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11260587865842308549noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433110028714184103.post-39935125475774910642012-03-06T14:44:00.004-05:002012-03-06T15:22:50.936-05:00Dreaming Big!I have always been a bit of a dreamer. Even when I was little, I wanted to play pro tennis, be a famous sports broadcaster, I think I even wanted to be Bette Midler. Anyway, It wasn't until I was much older that the art of cake designing became my love, obsession and dream. A few short years ago I set out on a journey to become the best cake artist I could be and to eventually open a bakery. My dreams began to come true in 2009 when we became a fully licensed bakery, we were on our way! Business was hopping and cakes were flying out of here "faster than a barefoot jackrabbit on a hot greasy griddle in the middle of August". My dreams were coming true...or so I thought.

Flash forward to October of last year. On October 12, 2011 my dreams began to change. My little baby girl came into this world in with some gusto (slight understatement) sending me into a whirlwind of change...I just didn't realize the magnitude yet. Before the baby, I had visions of conquering the world one baby milestone and well decorated cake at a time. Hahahahaha, yikes what was I thinking?!

To make a long story short; Many of you know I have decided to step away from party cakes, cupcakes and cookies to focus primarily on my one true cake love...weddings. And more importantly to spend time with my biggest, bestest, and most favorite dream in the world, my little girl. It's time for me to focus on her dreams...mine can wait.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me in this journey...I do have some of the most amazing clients in the land. And just think, she'll be in kindergarten in 5.5 years, that's not that long!!

xoxo

Jenny

Quote credit goes to my dear friend Sponge Bob.

Contact Informationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11260587865842308549noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433110028714184103.post-29308644306734620222012-01-17T10:08:00.002-05:002012-01-17T14:47:49.647-05:00Cupcakes + Favors = Cupcake Favors!
Over the past few years presenting your guests with a favor at your wedding has become quite the trend. It almost feels like a requirement these days..even I did it 6 years ago. The problem is; you want to give your guests something lovely that they will remember your day with...but who really wants a bag of tea and a cookie cutter (yep, that's what I gave...don't judge it was cute). Why not give them something tasty??!

A very popular item at A Couple of Sweet Things is our cupcake favor box. This is a super unique way to cover both your favors and your wedding dessert in one cute presentation. Each box comes with a gift tag and fork so guests can eat it right away or take it for later.

A small wedding cake can be designed to match for the traditional cutting of the cake.

For more info...send me an email to acoupleofsweetthings@gmail.com

Thanks!!

Jenny

Contact Informationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11260587865842308549noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433110028714184103.post-82420025714104204122012-01-11T08:24:00.002-05:002012-01-11T11:24:49.801-05:00Newley Engaged? I also had the privilege of working with Leslie Jones of Leslie Jones Weddings again...she is phenomenal. And lastly, I was 8 months pregnant and required a team of helpers (friends and family) to get this monster cake to the J.W. Becky Brown of Becky Brown Photography is a phenomenal photographer working in the Indianapolis-Chicago areas. When she told me she was working on developing her food photog skills and wanted to come hang out for the day I just couldn't wait! You see, Becky has some serious talent and I knew she was going to capture some amazing shots...and well she did. Check out some of my personal favs!

It's that time of year where every spring weekend is filled with weddings, showers and parties..it keeps me hoppin'!

Yeah, yeah I'm busy...I'm always nutty busy, that's not the reason for this post. I wanted to officially let my people (all 48 of you) know the big news. We are growing! Well, actually I am growing, at a very rapid rate non the less. Yes, if you haven't heard my husband and I are expecting our first baby in October. We are just over the moon with excitement and can't wait for her to get here. Yes, I said her....It's a GIRL!!

So after all of the joy/excitement/panic subsided I really had to think long and hard about what to do with the cake biz. This totally freaks me out--it is our second "official" year of business and it is growing like crazy. The thought of having to turn customers away makes me nauseous (and it's not from the pickles and jalapeno chips I had for breakfast). After thinking long and hard I came to this conclusion....We are going to be closed from October through January 1st. This might not seem drastic to many of you, but for a custom bakery with one employee, it is.

During this 3 month hiatus I will still be responding to e-mails and booking appointments for the 2012 wedding season which I will begin consultations for in December...just no making of the cakes.

I hope everyone understands this decision is uber hard for me (I am a bit of an obsessive when it comes to cakes) but it is what I feel I need to do for our new little Leisure :-)

xoxoxoxo
Jenny

Side bar: If you are planning on a spring 2012 wedding I recommend giving me a ring soon. I am already booking for May and June :-)Contact Informationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11260587865842308549noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433110028714184103.post-55091805244668594922011-05-01T12:43:00.003-04:002011-05-01T13:07:02.169-04:00Peonies, Lace & Vintage KeysLast week was a strange week filled with many different emotions. We saw storms devastate the south, crazy flooding all over the midwest and rain that I thought would never go away. Even London had predictions for rain on the day of the Royal Wedding. But just like in London the rain moved out of Indianapolis to make for one amazing wedding weekend--the "official" start to our wedding season.

Saturday's wedding took place at the historic Laurel Hall . This venue has history and charm oozing out of every little nook and cranny. While I am slightly bummed I didn't make it I am also slightly relieved. I must admit it was pretty exciting getting a call from the Food Network producers. I mean I live in New Pal, in the middle of nowhere with a shop that is, well you know...it's flippin' small. So as my friend Martha would say "It's a good thing".

I firmly believe that all things happen for a reason, you may not know the reason for weeks, months or even years. Eventually it will all make sense, with patience.

Flowers:
I absolutely love making sugar flowers, it is one of my favorite things. It is a hard and time consuming process, which makes them a little on the spendy side. Many bakeries purchase their flowers pre-made via wholesale sugar arts shops to help with costs and to keep production streamlined. I totally understand that this is necessary in many cases where time is important. The reason I make all of my flowers is because I truly love the art of it (even though sometimes making them makes me want to poke out my eyeballs, I love it). So why am I on this sugar flower soapbox? I'm glad you asked. You see there is a man in NYC named Ron Ben Israel and he is a master sugar artist. {Don't believe me? Click here} Anyway, Ron conducts limited sugar seminars each year and they sell out in like 2.2 seconds. Well as fate has it I got in to one of his seminars...and I'm pumped! He really takes sugar art to the next level which I'm hoping his seminar will help take my skills to the next level!

You see I didn't have to wait too long to find the good in not making it on Food Network!

French Macarons
I have been completely consumed by these little french cookies. At one point my entire kitchen was covered with the pretty pastel-ness of French Macarons. They aren't the same as the coconut macaroons we are all familiar with. They are light, delicate and taste amazing {especially when filled w/dark chocolate raspberry ganache} French macarons are taking the bakery scene by storm on the west coast so I thought Indy needed these little wonders too!

I will be featuring the new item at some up and coming bridal shows...in the mean time here is a little sneak peak...aren't the cute?!

Oh ya! You know the show..2 people + 8 hours = 3 ft tall cake that moves, talks, and shoots fireworks. (yikes) Needless to say I thought it was a really mean friend playing a joke on me, but it was actually the real deal. After hanging up with the producer; I died, laughed, and screamed (twice). Once that mess of excitement was over I had to get my portfolio together asap. They needed photos (check), written application (check) and an audition video (WHAT!@#).

Well, thanks to some super awesome folks on twitter (feel free to follow me @coupleofsweets) I was put in contact with a media company to help with the video. A few takes and several goof up's later this is my video....

I sent the producers the video today, fingers crossed :-) I have to say the competition is pretty stiff for this show. I am just thrilled to have been asked to audition.

I'll keep you posted!
JennyContact Informationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11260587865842308549noreply@blogger.com5
