Updates, announcements, and other info!!

Hello There!

It has been way too long since my last update...uhhhh March 6th?  Yikes!  Let's just say I've been a little bit busy.  Which brings me to the point of this post...

A Couple of Sweet Things is booked thru January 1, 2013 and won't begin consultations for the 2013 spring/summer wedding season until {at least} January 2013.

The above statement may seem a little weird, so let me explain.  As you all know in October of 2011 I had a little baby girl...and well my life changed.  Before having Ashlynn I thought I would just "continue as normal" once she arrived.  I tried, believe me I tried, but it sucked.  Even with having the shop attached to the house, it was hard.   Waking up at 4am to make sugar flowers, baking during nap time and decorating after bedtime was exhausting.  As I continued this schedule through the wedding busy season, my passion for decorating became more of a chore...not the labor of love it once was.

With all this being said, I have decided to take a bit of a sabbatical from cakes.  I'm not leaving forever, I just need to figure some things out.

My plan is to take a few months off...no emails, no cell phone, no cakes (well I may practice a bit;))...but I need to do what it takes to find the love of designing and decorating that is lost.

I'm sure there will be angered and frustrated people, but please know that I value and care for each and every one of my clients.  This decision is one I have been grappling with for months and it's the right thing for me...I mean it's just cake after all, right?

xoxo
Jenny

**My "sabbatical" will not begin until every last order that is currently on the books is complete and fabulous!  No need to panic, I'm just not accepting new orders.  Booked orders will NOT be impacted.**

Dreaming Big!

I have always been a bit of a dreamer. Even when I was little, I wanted to play pro tennis, be a famous sports broadcaster, I think I even wanted to be Bette Midler. Anyway, It wasn't until I was much older that the art of cake designing became my love, obsession and dream. A few short years ago I set out on a journey to become the best cake artist I could be and to eventually open a bakery. My dreams began to come true in 2009 when we became a fully licensed bakery, we were on our way! Business was hopping and cakes were flying out of here "faster than a barefoot jackrabbit on a hot greasy griddle in the middle of August". My dreams were coming true...or so I thought.

Flash forward to October of last year. On October 12, 2011 my dreams began to change. My little baby girl came into this world in with some gusto (slight understatement) sending me into a whirlwind of change...I just didn't realize the magnitude yet. Before the baby, I had visions of conquering the world one baby milestone and well decorated cake at a time. Hahahahaha, yikes what was I thinking?!

To make a long story short; Many of you know I have decided to step away from party cakes, cupcakes and cookies to focus primarily on my one true cake love...weddings. And more importantly to spend time with my biggest, bestest, and most favorite dream in the world, my little girl. It's time for me to focus on her dreams...mine can wait.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me in this journey...I do have some of the most amazing clients in the land. And just think, she'll be in kindergarten in 5.5 years, that's not that long!!

xoxo

Cupcakes + Favors = Cupcake Favors!

Over the past few years presenting your guests with a favor at your wedding has become quite the trend. It almost feels like a requirement these days..even I did it 6 years ago. The problem is; you want to give your guests something lovely that they will remember your day with...but who really wants a bag of tea and a cookie cutter (yep, that's what I gave...don't judge it was cute). Why not give them something tasty??!

A very popular item at A Couple of Sweet Things is our cupcake favor box. This is a super unique way to cover both your favors and your wedding dessert in one cute presentation. Each box comes with a gift tag and fork so guests can eat it right away or take it for later.

A small wedding cake can be designed to match for the traditional cutting of the cake.

2011...What a year!

Wow, 2011 was such an amazing year...where to begin??!

As I sat down to review my favorite moments of 2011 I was completely blown away with all of the fantastic things that happened at A Couple of Sweet Things. From taking classes with the "Sugar Master" himself; Ron Ben-Israel to creating a dream cake for a sweet little boy through my favorite organization, Icing Smiles--the year was stellar. But, I have to say my favorite part of 2011 was having the honor of designing so many awesome wedding cakes for some seriously fantastic couples.

Here are just a few of my favorite moments from 2011...what is your favorite?

#1 Ron Ben-Israel

What can I say this was a dream. come. true.

#2 Ellenberger/Wyns Wedding

I simply loved working with Karen and Brian on their wedding cake. Karen knew exactly what she wanted...and that was sugar paste flowers!

#3 Clayton/George Wedding

I knew from the minute I met with BethAnne Clayton that her wedding was going to be amazing. Her attention to detail was second to none. When we met BethAnne gave me a design package that included antique keys, custom stationary and a fabric swatch from her dress...this is what we came up with.

#4 Skinner/Wilson Wedding

I LOVE this cake, can you say YUM?! I met Stephanie years ago when we both worked at Starbucks slinging coffee. When she contacted me to make her cake I was soooo excited. I just knew we would be able to come up with a sweet design to match her wedding theme...

#5 Icing Smiles

If you haven't heard of Icing Smiles please visit their website to find out more. They are an amazing organization provides custom celebration cakes to families impacted by the critical illness of a child. I love this organization and was THRILLED to receive my first call to action. This was my first Icing Smiles dream cake...hopefully I will have many more.

#6 Abrams/Tobe Wedding

This cake made the list for many reasons. First off I love the Sweet & Saucy inspired design--who doesn't love a huge cascading flower? I also had the privilege of working with Leslie Jones of Leslie Jones Weddings again...she is phenomenal. And lastly, I was 8 months pregnant and required a team of helpers (friends and family) to get this monster cake to the J.W. Marriott in one piece--memories I won't soon forget!

And I just couldn't leave out these two...because, well, I love them :o)

Clark/Sommers Wedding...a total Fav!

Johnson/Griglione Wedding--Gorgeous!

Well that about wraps it up...I am sure I could have made a top 25 list..but I'll stop at my top 8 ;-) Here's to a new year full of great possibilities and successes!

Thanks for checking out my fav's of 2011!
